In 1938, President Roosevelt agreed to commission this airport when a suitable site close to central Washington was found. However, the majority of the land was actually flooded at that time and was an enormous quantity of gravel and soil was necessary to level the land well above the water table. Washington's new airport was inaugurated in 1940 and flights officially began the following year.
